Panel: Setting the right framework and building a robust news ecosystem

Subscription revenues and advertisement revenues have traditionally been the only sources of revenue for channels. With the onset of digitization, what are the other sources of revenue that can be exploited? In a crowded and extremely competitive news industry such as ours, how do news channels ensure balance? How can we ensure a robust news ecosystem in which each player can thrive?

The next phase of DAS is expected to be flagged off from April 2013. In this scenario is the current framework that the news TV industry operates in good enough to encourage an ethical news TV business model? Does it need strengthening? Has DAS reduced carriage fees for news TV? Do we need another iteration or correction of DAS following the lessons the industry has learned over the past year? Is the current TRAI proposal to restrict airtime helpful or harmful? Do we need to make some changes in the way self regulation is being done? There are issues of corporate investments in TV news networks; cross media restrictions; interested party investments. A panel examines this apart from several other issues.
